Ch. 7 Thoughts

The Jews were treated like animals once again when they were fed bread by the German worker. The worker was exploiting their suffering and hunger for his own amusement eventually as it was fascinating for him to watch them fight over food. But this worker was not thinking about what it would be like if he had been their position. However, when Wiesel witnessed a similar event years later, except with coins this time, he tried stopping one of the ladies as he knew how cruel it was capitalize on the hardships of others for your own amusement. This also shows how the lack of empathy could still be seen in the world, even after the war had ended.

  1. Eric, I definitely see your point as to how the world can still lack empathy. I feel as though people today don't put themselves in someone else's shoes, but rather jump to conclusions as to what they think is best.

  2. Eric, I also noticed how the Jews were treated as animals when they were thrown the food. This event showed that Jews weren't treated as humans anymore. The Jews also seem to react as if they were not humans either. They all just went against each other for a piece of bread.

  3. Eric I think your insight is very profound, and I agree with you that a reason for the worlds lack of empathy is due to the fact that many people do not consider what it would be like to switch places with the person who is suffering. I think that if people did that more often, like how Elie did when he saw the lady throwing coins, the world would be a better place.
