Ryan - How to Kill a Mockingbird II

The subsequent six chapters of the book left me feeling more eerie than normal about the Radely House. The subtle but creepy mentions of Boo Radely and his residence specifically causes me to believe that this is foreshadowing indicating that his lifestyle may be more frightening than it appears to be to Scout and Jem. Aside from his action during the neighborhood fire, the increase dreariness of his dark but empty house causes readers like myself to ponder what truly goes on in the life of Mr. Radely. Adding on to his house's suspicous appearance, his action of covering up Scout wand leading her and her brother to his house leads me to think Mr. Radely may be some type of kidnapper or child abuser. Nonetheless, it is hard to tell this early on what Mr. Radely's true intentions are for Scout and her sibling as well as what is truly going on in his mind.

  1. I totally agree with you; there's something unsettling about Boo Radley, I think that the adults are definitely hiding information about him from the kids.

  2. Ryan and Monique, consider separating the rumors from the tangible actions of Boo Radley. What has he actually done so far in the story? He left toys for the children in the tree and he covered up Scout with a blanket when she was cold. Could these actions possibly be seen as compassionate?

  3. Ryan - I'm not sure if this was an oversight, but the book title is To Kill a Mockingbird (rather than How to Kill...) :)

  4. I don't think Radley is a "child abuser" because for one, we don't really know anything about him, except for the rumors. Although, your claim isn't incorrect either! For all we know, the rumors could have a hint of truth to them, and with that there could definitely be a dark side to Radley. I'm also interested in finding out about what is in that house, but I think there are more interesting things in the book that you could miss being wrapped up in the Boo Radley complex!

  6. I also noticed Mr. Radley's appearance during the fire. I agree with Brandon that he's not a child abuser but rather a man whose trying to be accepted by the people considering what they say about him. It kind of reminded me of Frankenstein when the creature does good things for the family because he wants to be accepted by them and not feared. I think the fact that he reveals to him to the children foreshadows something that's going to happen but I'm not sure what.
