Throughout these past chapters, I noticed that Scout and Jem called Atticus by his name rather than calling him father or dad. I was confused on why they called him by his name? Atticus was okay with his children calling him by his name as well. I feel like it was a sign of respect back then to call them by their name. Or maybe Scout and Jen were too embarrassed to call him father due to how he was older than all the other kids parents from school and they didn't want them to know that Atticus was their father.

I was wondering about the same thing, considering that even the rest of their family thinks it strange that Scout and Jem call him Atticus instead of 'Pa', or something like that.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of that as well. I find it strange that Atticus tells Jem to listen to Mrs.Dubose but he does not tell his children to address him with respect. Two contradictory behaviors.
ReplyDeleteAtticus is their father, but he is older than most fathers and doesn't engage in the activities most fathers do (in the book). His role in their lives is different. He is certainly not without emotion or affection for his children, but the way he counsels and guides them is like that of a mentor. It's as if he also puts them on his level of ability to understand and behave like mature, responsible members of the community.
