Ch 4

I found it interesting how the soups taste different when different people were executed. First he said the soup tasted the best it had ever when the older man that did not show much emotion was killed but when the little boy was killed he said it tastes of corpse. I think the soup tasted of corpse to him because of the fact that the little boy struggles before he died. He was hanging for more time then the older men and when he looked him in the eyes he could see that he was alive. I also think that he saw himself in the little boy and thought how he would be suffering if it was him that had gotten hanged.

  1. Arlene, I think you are pretty much right. I found it interesting how the boy's life was given more value than the other people who were hanged. But then again the kid was just a kid and that scared Elie because he realized that kids were now also hanged when it was just older men.

  2. Interesting Arlene, the fact that you say he sees him self in the little boy makes me think. I love that you say that because as he watches this little boy die, it could be possible this symbolizes the death of his own childhood and now he has to grow up to survive.

  3. I find it interesting that you and Brendee point out the possible symbolism of the boy. The boy's death may symbolize that Elie now has to grow up and survive, or it might show the death of Elie's faith. It may be the major turning point in Elie's beliefs.
