Ch 6
I was very shocked when Elie said that he thought Rabbi Eliahu's son had purposely left his father because he thought he was just weight. He said he had to carry with his father and wanted to get rid of him because he was weak. I understand that it was a tough time, that they were going through a situation that no one can understand unless they went through it themselves but, he showed no humanity towards his father when he left him. His father searched for him, his father cared enough to look for him, and he didn't care about his father. Then I was shocked when Elie said he hoped he would not do the same but he did not confirm that he wouldn't.

Arlene, yes it's very hard to even come close to comprehending what they went through and which influenced their decisions. However perhaps later in this book we will learn more about the reason Rabbi Eliahu's son left his father behind. He could have been completely out of it, like when Elie ran he would sometimes not focus to the point the people running behind him would become bothered by it. Perhaps the son's body was it's own at this point too. But if he did notice, there's also the chance he hoped his father would be okay and Elie is only hoping what he is unconsciously thinking he could do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Yoaly, that the son may have been completely out of it and unintentionally left his father behind. I think Elie prayed to God for strength so that he would not leave his father when he was at his lowest.
ReplyDeleteArlene, I was also shocked in how Elie prayed to God that he would not abandon his father but didn't confirm it. I believe that this prayer he made to God was his sign of weakness. A sign that he didn't trust himself in not abandoning his father. In the previous chapter he seems to have gathered anger towards God and somewhat lost faith, which is really ironic since he is praying to God in this chapter. I believe he prayed because he was scared that if he ever did abandon his father, he would be to blame for.
ReplyDeleteI think that Elie prays to never leave his father because he's seen how being in the concentration camp has changed everyone, including himself. Everyone is doing whatever it takes to keep themselves alive, even if it means hurting someone else, but as much as Elie wants to survive, he doesn't want to do so at someone else's expense. He prays because he doesn't know what he will face or experience next. He doesn't know how he will change in character. He doesn't know if it will become increasingly more difficult to stay with his father. He prays because he feels that he needs guidance and support through this tough time, and even though he is angry with God, God has been his source of strength and support throughout his life so far, and at this point he doesn't know who else or what else to turn to in trying times.
