I find it admirable how even in the face of looming
death, while some of the younger Jews were ready to start a rebellion, most of
the older ones were able to stop them and hold on to their faith. Some may say
that it was foolish for them to have just sat back and let all these terrible
things happen to them without fighting back, but this was their way of still
trying to retain that last part of them that they could still try and hold
onto. Who knows what would have happened if they had started a rebellion within
the camp, but attacking the ones who wronged them would have made them lose a
part of their humanity as it would be against their faith.
Eric, you are pretty much right. I also find it admirable how some people tried to revolt and fight back in order to be liberated. However, I think that nothing happened because they were to scared and once again they still hoped that things would be over as if a miracle would happen. I think that they forgot that they had to fight back for their freedom even if it was a useless attempt. But, then again they had family members and perhaps they were afraid that they Nazis might kill them sooner. Perhaps, they would have died sooner or some would have succeeded if they had revolted.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Eric that it was important to hold back a revolt in order to keep their humanity. The Nazis were already attempting to break them, and a revolt would have fallen right into the plans of the Nazis. Fighting back in an animalistic way would cause them to lose the humanity they had.
ReplyDeleteEric I agree but I also think that aside from their humanity the fear that they had was greater than them and the older people did not have the courage to rebel because they feared that rebellion would lead to worse conditions
ReplyDeleteI agree that rebellion in part would help someone loose their hummanity by killing but also gain hummanity by standing up for what was right. I'm not saying that killing is ever ok but they could also save many lives. It is interesting to think about what would have happened if they did.
