Fire
I am responding to the specific passage on the
last page of chapter one, when Mrs. Schachter was once again screaming about a
fire that no one else could see when they arrived at the camp, and everyone
looked out and there was, indeed, fire. The horrific scene that is depicted
here is difficult to imagine being real. A crazy screaming lady predicting what
would actually happen and the smell of burning flesh all seems like it would be
in a fiction book, a made up horror story. I doubted its truthfulness because
of how absurd and unlikely it sounded. I doubted the story because of how unbelievable
it was, just like the Jews doubted Moishe when he warned them of the German’s
atrocities. I connected with the story by doubting the story- just as the Jews
doubted Moishe as told in the story.
