Death

Death was all around the remanding Jews of Sighet in Auschwitz as the option for them is work or get burned to death in the crematorium. This change all the remaining Jews as they started to realize that this is no dream. It made few pray but others like Elie lost their faith in god. All started to turn selfish as they only though of living not the conditions of the rest. This is scary as it just the first day in the concentration camp. This reminds me a little of how U.S Marine Corps Basic Training changes people.

  1. I agree Alex everything that they went through changes them but I do not think that they became selfish but more learned what they needed to be able to survive. They lost all emotions because they had to otherwise they would not be able to survive as seen when Elie doesn't do anything when his dad is slapped. If he had defended his father he would have made the situation worse.

  2. Alex, I also noticed the difference in how Elie seems to have lost faith in God throughout this chapter. At first in the beginning of the book he seemed to be a devout Jew, by being interested in studying his religion, but I believe the reason for his loss in faith was because he has been seeing terrible things happen to people in these camps and is really astonished with how God would let that happen. That's why he's doubting his belief in God.
