Hanging
There is a lot of irony during the hanging of the prisoners during chapter 4. The reason is that Auschwitz is a death camp where every day the Nazis where burning Jews alive in the crematorium and to killed 4 prisoners by hanging as a punishment of a crime was rather superfluou and unexpected. I would imagine that the Nazis would just executed the men by firing squad. I felt that at this point the camp was runned by the Blockälteste more than the Nazi Germans as it's something that they would not do.

I believe the purpose of the hangings were to make a point to the Jews. The Nazis were able to put more fear into the Jews by showing them the struggle of those who were hanged, and the slow painful death of the child. They even forced the Jews to walk up and look at the hanging bodies.
ReplyDeleteI agree and did not notice that Alex. But I also think that the soldiers wanted to make a point to the Jews. At that point they were so used to seeing the crematorium but when they hung them in front of them it signified there power and they wanted to show them who was in charge.
ReplyDeleteI see but a firing squad could of done the same job of intimating the Jews as it would show to the Jews that the Nazi can personally eliminate any dissent in the camp.
