Chapters 10-18 I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

In chapters 10-18 what stood out to me the most was Marguerite’s and Bailey’s adoration of their mother. I can’t understand why they felt no anger towards her when she had abandoned them to live with their grandmother and never visited them. Then, out of the blue, she decides she wants them to live with her and has her ex-husband pick them up from their grandmother’s house and pluck them out of life as they know it. I would harbor resentment towards the person who did that to me. Despite the fact that even though the children now lived with their mother, they still hardly ever saw her. Oddly, they still fawned over her and admired her beauty. For the majority of the time they lived with her, they seemed constantly in awe of her, almost as if she was a mythical creature that they thought didn't exist in real life.

  1. I think that I would also have resentment towards someone if they did that to me, but I think that the characters don't respond in this way because they're just doing what they can to get their mother's attention. They've never had it before and now that they could possibly receive it, they'll do anything to obtain it -- even if it means not being angry with her and admiring her. That's what the character from my book, Breaking Night, does -- she always forgives her parents actions and does anything she can to feel as though she has their attention, to feel like she's important to them.

  2. It is interesting how sometimes people admire those that do bad things to them, but I also feel like not forgiving the actions of others can also be something that stirs up too many negative emotions, just like Yossarian from Catch-22 who holds grudges and feels like everybody is out to get him.

  3. Most likely because of there past of always being moved around they didn't feel as if it was real life. Maya looks up to her in fascination but they have no relationship to them. They only see the beauty of her but not the heartlessness that she gave them away to there grandparents. I think she has a plant hats no good because it doesn't make sense that now she wants them back. I think her part in the story is to show the importance of beauty and how powering it is in Maya's life. So powering, she feels no resentment to her.

  4. I think that they adored her so even after she abandoned them because they thought it was their fault that she left or that she was too good for them. They were too young to process what she did but they still had to deal with the emotional and mental repercussions.
