The Road Section 3

In this section I noticed a connection between what the man had done and what the boy does. Previously, the man had thrown away his wallet as a symbol of him letting go of the past and looking to the future.  In this section the boy threw away his flute, possibly with the same intentions as the man.  If the boy did not do this with the same intent as his father, I fear that he threw away his flute because he is starting to give up.  He has already seen horrific sights such as a roasted baby and people suffering in a basement.  Perhaps he has been pushed to his limit.  I hope, however, that he still has hope and they both can continue on.

  1. I agree with you Cielo, when the boy through away the flute it was a sign of letting go to me. I think he didn't think he deserves any happiness or was aware of the fact that he would have to face more hardships that he might not be able to overcome and so he just gave up a little.

  2. I think that when people face adverse situations it's often very easy to give up. In my group's book, the main character faces so much that at one point she says that there are days when she doesn't want to get out of bed and she always has to force herself up, but in the past there were days where she didn't always do what she was supposed to and gave into her sense of hopelessness. I think that people often have moments in which they give up -- not forever, but temporarily -- due to the fact that people can only handle so much, such bad situations, for so long, and their temporary surrender gives them a chance to regroup and recuperate.
