The Road (Part 3)

When reading this third section of the book I was confused on why the man and boy left the bunker which was filled with goods and could have possibly been a safe place to live in. At the beginning of this book the man and boy's goal was to go to the other side of town because they thought it was a better place to be able to survive in. If survival is their priority the bunker could have been their sanctuary. A thing I found very instersting in this part of the book was when he man and boy bumped into a old man who called himself "Ely." The old man said that name wasnt really his and that he doesn't tell people his real name because he doesn't trust them. I understand the old man's point on this but the man and boy had helped him by giving him food. Living in a world where most people are against each other and everyones priority is survival, I believe this was something worth giving ones name to.

  1. I agree Lizette, I belive the man didn't want to give his name because he knew the world that he lived in required him to protect himself including his name. But, seeing as the man and son gave him food I think he should have dropped his defense and trusted them. This defense mechanisms also gives an insight into how bad the world they live in is.

  2. I don't necessarily agree that the old man should have given his name or dropped his defense and trust them like you said Arlene. The old man has seen some pretty horrible things I'm sure. He might just no longer want to become so attached to people because it could be a trap and well, in the end everyone is going to die and end up alone. He's stopped believing in something higher (god if I remember correctly) and so he's really just living day to day. And Lizette, the father was afraid that someone could find them even though he won't really admit it to the son. That's why he placed the mattress on top.
