The Good Guys

From the very beginning of this section, the son and the father continue to share the belief that they are the "good guys" and are continually running away from the "bad guys".  I feel that them labeling themselves as the "good guys" creates adversity for themselves, because the father still has to act as a role model to his son even in these grim circumstances. The thought that the post-apocalyptic society would turn to the imprisonment and cannibalism left me really disgusted and terrified for the Man, and especially the son who the Man feared "something was gone that could not be put right again" after witnessing all the things they pasted along the Road. Another theme that i keep noticing is how they are constantly questioning their death, which makes me wonder why they are still traveling the road, and where they really do intend to end up both literally and emotionally.

  1. I think calling themselves the "good guys" helps them keep their moral standing despite the horrid situation they're in. I can see how it could create problems when youre constantly trying to decipher right from wrong, but I believe it's their way of coping with everything.
I do wonder the same thing, why do they continue to travel this road? But I think it's like the whole "the grass is always greener on the other side." They're just looking for a place where everything is better, and where they don't have to worry about dying all the time.

  2. I agree with Mikaela in that I think the label of "good guys" is meant to help keep them as upstanding/moral and sane that they could possibly be despite their situation. I could see how that might create adversity though. Also, I think that the Man is still sometimes able to do what is necessary and cast off his "role model" hat, such as in the previous portion when he killed the man from the truck.
As for why they're still on the road, I personally believe it's because they are fairly certain that they will die at some point, but they would rather give it a fighting chance, whether to take their minds off of the situation in a way or just so they aren't sitting ducks. I think, though, that there must be some hope left in their minds, otherwise I really don't think they would be trying so hard and expending so much energy.
