The Road

The part I found very interesting when reading the first section of the book was when the man had a flashback to a time when he was with his wife. His wife left him and his son, yet the man is still willing to stay alive because his son needs him to survive. Something I also found very interesting was how both the man and son remain unnamed throughout this portion of the book. I believe the reason why the author didn't want to  name them was because of the situation they're in. They're in a post apocalyptic world so all that matters at the moment is their survival and heading south.

  1. I agree with you Lizette, I think that the author didn't use any names in order to draw the reader into the content and not distract from the situation that they were in. They faced a lot of adversity in this first section and the one that stood out to me was the wife leaving like you noted. In my opinion he is less selfish then his wife and wants to survive for his son.

  2. I agree with you both Arlene and Lizette. The wife's comments struck me quite hard. She had survived for so long and in the end, instead of continuing their journey together as a family, as one, she decides to stop and end it. The father to me, seems to have more self control, more strength to keep living. But his son is also a source of this strength and I can see that the mother did not share this view.

  3. I never even considered the theories that King, Lizette and Arlene thought about the lack of names, but i find that really insightful. The more i began to think about it, i agree with King a little more, because i feel like the lack of names is more distracting than just giving them simple names. As readers, we all focused on something as simple as the names of the main characters, which just shows how much we want to know all the details of these characters lives, and how little McCarthy is willing to reveal.
