The Road. First Glance
I found McCarthy's writing style interesting. I noticed his use of punctuations was a bit scattered and inconsistent. And he doesn't use quotation marks to distinguish dialogue within the text, which can cause a bit of confusion for the reader. I also found it strange that the two characters, the father and the son, remained unnamed throughout this whole section I read.

I agree Kingsly, his writing style is interesting, but I'll admit it caught me off guard in the beginning because I'm not used to reading this sort of style. I'm not quite sure how I feel about the absence of quotation marks for the dialogue. I find it to be, giving off a neutral vibe, perhaps monotone. I'm not sure how to describe it. I think the father and son will remain unnamed throughout the book. The author could be focusing more on their struggles as one and how they survive.
ReplyDeleteI like how we were discussing this in class earlier this week. But I completely agree with you. Sometimes McCarthy's writing style confuses me and I get a little lost with what exactly is happening. Especially since we switches between past and present, and reality and dreams. But I feel like it keeps me interesting and wanting to know what's really going on. I also really want to know their names. It's driving me crazy that they don't have names and that the father never calls the boy by his name.
ReplyDeleteI agree Kingsly I didn't understand when events ended which got me confused when reading the book. I think that they don't use names so that the reader doesn't get distracted from the content and what is happening.
ReplyDeleteKingsly I also noticed that the characters in this section remained unnamed. I believe the reason for that is cause the author wants to put emphasis on what's important at the moment. In this case survival is the most important thing to the man and the boy because they're living in a world where they fear others because they're scared they might get killed
