Life of Pi- Section 3

In this 3rd section of Life of Pi, our main character continues with his struggle of being stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean with a tiger. This section illustrates the various ways that Pi is dealing with this adversity. By the end of our section he has more or less tamed the tiger, and kept him restricted to small section of the lifeboat, similar to a zoo enclosure. I thought it was really amazing how there was such a connection between his upbringing in the zoo and how this helped him overcome such an enormous obstacle. I predict that he will continue to use the things we heard about earlier in the book, and the knowledge he acquired will help save his life.

  1. Andrew, I definitely agree with your observation that Pi's background in the zoo has served as a major asset as he continues to tame Richard Parker. In fact, I'd expand on this idea by including Pi's spiritualism as another factor which is helping him tame the beast. As if he were a god, Pi's seeking to assert his dominance over Richard Parker by demonstrating to him not only his ability to bring him pain and discomfort (when he was rocking the boat and blowing his whistle to cause sea-sickness) but also his ability to bring him satisfaction (when he was providing him with fresh fish to eat). In this sense, Pi is continuing to demonstrate to Richard Parker that he in fact is the Alpha, the one in charge, and Parker's own survival will depend on him. And as this message is made more apparent, I believe the taming of Richard Parker will eventually become complete.

  2. I also agree with you about how fortunate Pi was to be brought up with parents who own a Zoo. He uses all of his knowledge to help him stay alive and to ensure that the tiger stays alive as well. I definitely think that the neither of them would be alive still if Pi did not have the background that he did.
