Section 3 -Jasmin Aguirre
I really didn't like Aunt Alexandra's attitude. She came to stay with them and practically took control of the whole house and the children. Atticus being her brother seemed to let her take control due to how he didn't want to be disrespectful to his own sister and wanted her to feel comfortable at his house. We know that Aunt Alexandra wanted too educate them now since Atticus really didn't spend the time to educate them like normal kids. But Jem and Scout are older already and don't like the way their aunt is taking control and trying to educate them, something they weren't used too.

I agree that Aunt Alexandra is presented as a dislikeable character, but I think that she serves a valuable purpose as a foil to Atticus.
ReplyDeleteIsabelle, I totally agree that she's like Atticus's antithesis. Atticus is a modern-minded, racially sensitive man and Aunt Alexandra is the proper southern lady personified. She's irritating and backwards and she antagonizes Scout for being anything but a proper young lady. Overall, I think her purpose is to draw our attention to how unique Atticus was and his household from the rest of Maycomb.
DeleteI AGREE. but at the same time I like how they present them as brother and sister fighting over what is best for the children. I mean to say that family relationships can go beyond what should be said and done, such as pushing boundaries and not following the unspoken rules of a family.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you saying how Jem and Scout aren't used to it. Although, it's a kind of like a compare/contrast situation seeing how Atticus and Alexandra interact vs. Jem and Scout. It really shows the dynamic between siblings, showing that unity and harmony aren't always possible.
