TKAM Section 3:

Jem is now twelve and is beginning to grow up. Jean notices this change and asks Calpurnia about it. What she says worries Scout because throughout her life she spent most of her time with Jem. She says she still wants to beat him up but Jem is much bigger than she is. I think that this represents the change that we all go through. By time Jean will grow up and understand what happened to Jem. Jean is still to young to understand hormonal changes in humans but what I have to say about this and how it relates to me is I have a little sister if my own. I was always pushed to take care of her because she followed me around. She was stuck like glue onto me and so she's a lot like me. Now that we've grown up the distance grew between us. There was one time I remember distinctively from all the memories in my head was the time I came home from school and I decided to hug my sister. It was just a feeling that I thought I needed to do. So I feel like throughout this book Jean will understand these changes and Jen will also reflect off the distant that has cut the close relationship between himself and Jean.

  1. With Jem growing so quickly at this age, how do you think the racial tensions in Maycomb have affected his growth up to this point in the book?

  2. I also relate to this "growth" with three younger siblings. Do you think it would have been the same if it were a vise versa situation? (so if Scout was the oldest, and Jem was younger)

  3. As the plot of the book develops further, do you think Jean will start to act more mature as she starts to see Maycomb for what it is along side Jem?
